Innovative community action networks - ICAN Peachey Belt ProjectsYoung people who have participated in the 2004/05 ARTSsmart 'Makin' it Peachey!' project, will be provided with individual casework support and training enabling them to build on their chosen area of interest and Arts practice. Peachey Mark 2 A performing arts (music/dance/theatre) based project working with a group of up to 45 young people and 3 teachers from 3 different high schools. The project will include a series of performing arts based workshops to explore contemporary issues affecting young people. The workshop process will culminate into a series of touring performances developed by young people for young people and serving as a peer education tool. After each performance a forum will take place between the actors and the audience to discuss contemporary issues affecting young people and answer relevant questions. The project aims to engage young people and the community in a dialogue to address contemporary issues affecting the education and career pathways for local young people. PiCTUReS oF Me PiCTUReS oF Me is a performance by young people from the Northern suburbs. This project was funded through the Northern Innovative Community Action Networks (ICAN) initiative to address retention and engagement of young people in education, training or job pathways. ICAN’s are networks of people such as parents, employers, community groups, government and young people who join together to explore what will work in their community to inspire young people to continue their education. Music, video, performance and dance reveal egos, thought processes, choices, misunderstandings and the realities of discovering ourselves as individuals. PiCTUReS oF Me is a celebration of difference and somewhere in the mix we discover we are all going through similarities & common experiences that bring us together. Thirty–nine young people from Craigmore High School, Smithfield Plains High School and Para West Adult Campus present a snapshot into their world and lives. A voyeuristic look into who they think they are, who they present themselves as. How are they seen versus how they wish to be understood. At what point does our outside image define the complexities on the inside? Artsworkers, students and teachers have been participating together in a series of performing arts, music and digital arts-based workshops timetabled into the weekly school program. Exploring contemporary issues affecting the students’ lives and new ways of learning together these workshops engaged young people and the community in a dialogue to address contemporary issues affecting education and career pathways.
