Nicholas Thomas
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Nicholas Thomas's work explores childhood daydreams where the inanimate becomes animate and the world exists in fragments, what lies beyond the borders is for the viewer to construct. Kitsch cute, dark mysterious, sad thoughts confuse with happy ones and give themselves as little gifts, pretty in pink, tied with a bow. Thomas presents a disruption of perceptions, a confusion of reality with an aim to challenge the way we perceive our worlds. Little Pink BoNes, housing little sad thoughts. Incorporating imagery derived from Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations with that from children’s story books and nursery rhymes (which are not that unrelated) the question is asked what lies beneath the pink candy shell of our lives? The drawings in their boxes are meant to be picked up, opened and experienced. They are meant to involve the viewer physically, having to pick them up and open the box to see the work. A sense of intimacy is created as only one person can view the work properly at a time.
