James Marshall

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"My paintings give insight into my life and the world around me. Raw images are used over layered backgrounds to build depth and persuade the viewer to see things from my perspective. Elements such as colour are applied to swamp the viewer as if a stream of self-consciousness is in some way clinging to the wall. Dealing with issues relevant to my world I believe that each painting expresses a certain feeling or idea that I am facing at that moment in time. Every colour, line, piece of text, and a lot-of-the-time random marking is carefully placed over a period of time so that the whole work reflects exactly what I have set out to express. Raw figures and images float over coloured fragments trying to create new structures, wholeness and even new meaning by breaking up my and my world." James Marshall, 2005.
